Man dead after gunshot fired inside vehicle at Corners of Brookfield parking lot

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A man is dead after a shot was fired from within a vehicle in the Corners of Brookfield parking lot.

Town of Brookfield Police Officer's conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that ultimately stopped in the parking lot early on Saturday.

As an officer approached the vehicle, a single gunshot was fired from within.

Despite lifesaving measures, the man inside the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Officers did not discharge any of their weapons, according to a release from the Town of Brookfield Police Department.

The Town of Brookfield Police Department says that there is no threat to the community and the incident is in the beginning stages of an investigation.

The Town of Brookfield Police Department has requested the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation to lead the investigation into this officer-involved incident.

The Corners of Brookfield issued the following statement: 

Our sympathy is with all those involved in this tragic situation and we thank the Town of Brookfield Police Department and other authorities for their support. We will continue to offer any cooperation we can to their investigation.

The Corners of Brookfield is open to visitors, and the lower level parking structure has now reopened.
