Man charged in crash that killed Germantown 19-year-old sentenced to 15 years in prison

GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The man charged in the death of a Germantown 19-year-old in a high-speed crash last year was sentenced to 15 years behind bars Thursday, Aug. 28.

According to police, officers attempted a traffic stop for a suspended vehicle registration on Aug. 9, 2024. Nineteen-year-old Javonte Spikes and Samantha Recore were in the car.

Spikes fled from police at a speed over 100 miles per hour in a 35 zone.

Police body camera footage of the chase was played in court. Spikes lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

He went to the hospital, but Recore died at the scene.

Family members shared how much they loved the 19-year-old girl who was taken too soon, as Spikes apologized for his actions.

“I never meant this to happen. I love Sam. She meant a lot to me. Every single day, I am reminded of what I did," Spikes said.

"My family and friends will forever grieve.," said Melissa Recore, Samantha's mother. "But I hope after today, we can start healing. I cannot hold on to anger and my grief. It will destroy my family and myself, and I won’t let that get taken away too, Samantha wouldn't want that.”

Spikes will also face another 15 years of extended supervision after his time behind bars.
