MADACC temporarily suspends intake of healthy cats due to increase in highly contagious virus
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) is temporarily suspending intake of healthy cats.
They say this is a precautionary measure due to a recent increase in feline panleukopenia cases among outdoor and shelter cats. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected cats or their bodily fluids, or indirectly through contaminated food bowls, bedding, litter boxes, or clothing.
MADACC says this is a necessary step in order to protect the safety of cats currently in their care.
“Our first responsibility is to protect the animals in our care,” said Karen Sparapani, executive director of MADACC. “By pausing the intake of healthy cats, we can focus our efforts on containment, sanitation, and treatment to stop the spread of this dangerous disease.”
Community members are asked to leave healthy cats where they are during this temporary suspension, unless they're visibly sick or injured. The suspension will remain in effect until MADACC determines it is safe to resume normal operations.
Dog intake is not affected.
MADACC says you can offer support through adoption, fostering, or donating supplies/funds for care.
Right now, they say REScue wipes, spray, and disposable pee pads are needed most.
