MADACC offers adoption promotion as they reach 'critical capacity'
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission is operating beyond capacity, housing 193 dogs in a facility designed for 149, according to Kate Hartlund, community engagement coordinator for MADACC.
"We are full. we are full to the brim," MADACC said.
Being at "critical capacity," MADACC announced an adoption promotion of $50 for dogs off their stray hold through May 25. Staff says that every adopted or fostered animal frees space for incoming strays.
Since posting on social media about the promotion, Hartlund said the community stepped up, and that's what they needed. "We can't fix the problem ourselves; we need the community to help us fix the problem."
The agency, which serves as Milwaukee County’s only open-admission shelter for stray animals, continues to accept all strays from within the county. MADACC is asking for public assistance through adoptions, temporary foster care and donations.
"We are an open admissions stray facility for Milwaukee County, so if it is a stray or injured animal from Milwaukee County, we can't say no. We don't say no. But we need help," said Hartlund.
There are dogs of all breeds, sizes, and personalities available for adoption. "Every dog that came here came from a family... and for some reason, they ended up here. It is what it is, and that's what we're going to do, we'll find them their best home they can," shared Hartlund.
The call to the community brought in large crowds, like Penn Simmons, who adopted a cat on Tuesday. "When we saw they were dealing with an overflow issue, we were talking about wanting another cat, it seemed like a great time to come and support," he said.
Officials note that rapid reunifications help reduce crowding and improve conditions, so owners of lost pets are asked to check MADACC daily to look for lost animals.
If you're not looking to adopt a pet but want to help, Hartlund encourages you to foster, volunteer, or donate.
