MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Scammers continue to target taxpayers by posing as IRS agents through phone calls, emails and text messages to steal personal and financial information. The IRS does not request sensitive data through these methods and demands for payment using gift cards or wire transfers are red flags.
Tony Drake of Drake & Associates joined us on Tuesday, March 11 to suggest that filing taxes early is the best defense against fraud, as the IRS accepts only one return per Social Security number. Using secure tax software or working with a reputable professional can also reduce risk, according to Drake.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to register for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) for added security. Those who suspect identity theft should report it to the IRS, the Federal Trade Commission and major credit bureaus.
