MILWAUKEE, WI (CBS 58) -- April is Neurodiversity Awareness Month and new research is now shedding light on the importance of caregiver wellness. This for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Dr. Norah Johnson, a professor in the College of Nursing and director of the pediatric primary care nurse practitioner program, was recently published in the International Journal of Developmental Disabilities. Her study focuses on improving the health of parents of autistic children through personalized exercise routines.
While exercise is well-known for its physical and mental benefits, Dr. Johnson’s research discusses just how challenging it can be for parents of children with autism to make time for it. In interviews with 30 parents, many shared that lack of time, trustworthy childcare, and ongoing stress were key challenges in regard to regular physical activity.
As part of the study, 10 parents joined a group exercise program built around their preferred activities. The result? Not only did participants report improved mental and physical health, but their well-being also had a positive impact on their children.
