Lightning strike causes house fire in Racine, cat found dead in home

CITY OF RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Racine fire crews say they found a cat dead inside a home after responding to a house fire prompted by a lightning strike during the morning of Sat. Sep. 13. 

The Racine Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of Carlisle Avenue for a report of smoke coming from the attic after a lightning strike. 

The homeowner said they were startled by a loud boom while sleeping during a thunderstorm. He then started to smell something burning and saw smoke in the attic space of his home, before calling 911.

Upon arrival, crews say a fire in the attic was deemed under control and loss stopped within 31 minutes. 

No injuries occurred to residents or fire personnel. 

Crews did find a dead cat but say there were able to rescue 4 other cats from the home. 

The Racine Fire Department says the second floor of the home sustained major fire and smoke damage, while the first floor and basement sustained minor smoke and water damage. 

Officials say the cause of the fire was a lightning strike to the home.
