KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A tragic crash in Tennessee left two members of a college cycling team dead and nine others injured Wednesday, Aug. 19. The team was training together when they were struck by a vehicle.

One of the victims, Haylan Engdahl, grew up in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, and went to high school in Kenosha, attending Christian Life School.

Engdahl was a sophomore at Milligan University.

Sixty-nine-year-old John Benfield was taken into custody in connection to the crash and charged with vehicular homicide by recklessness. Officials say the investigation is still active and stressed that the cyclists were experienced.

"They are athletes," said Steve Finney, district attorney, Washington County, Tennessee. "This is an elite cycling team. It's not a bunch of club guys getting together to ride. They know what they're doing."

In a post shared on social media Wednesday, Milligan University said:

"We are profoundly shocked and saddened to share that members of our cycling team were in an accident involving a vehicle this morning while cycling in Hampton, TN. Sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were killed in this accident. Multiple other Milligan cyclists were also seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Johnson City Medical Center. There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss. Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy. Please keep the Milligan community in your prayers."

The university president says they've made counseling resources available for students and their families.
