Kenosha couple charged with more than 170 counts related to animal mistreatment
Kenosha County Sheriff\'s Department KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Kenosha couple is facing more than 170 animal mistreatment charges.
According to the criminal complaint, officials investigating found 27 dogs inside their home -- seven on the first floor, 18 in the basement, and two in the garage.
Margarita Arrieta-Alcaide and Luis Melendez are accused of keeping several of the dogs in wire cages without any bedding.
The complaint says investigators viewed multiple videos on Melendez' social media page -- one which reportedly showed seven puppies in a small kennel together, stained and dirty. It says the puppies "hardly have any room to move, no food, no water, and no bedding."
Authorities say they found old urine pads and fecal remains scattered throughout the house.
The complaint says all of the dogs had "dirty ears, skin folds, hair issues, and skin issues," and some were pregnant and in need of veterinary care. Prosecutors say most of the dogs needed to be carried up the stairs and did not know how to walk on a leash.
Investigators asked Arrieta-Alcaide how often they hit the dogs, according to the complaint, after noticing the animals cowering in response to hand movements. She allegedly responded whenever they went downstairs or moved the dogs.
Both have been arrested and charged with more than 171 counts related to animal mistreatment and neglect.
