Kansas City Police Captain Killed in the Line of Duty

A Kansas City police officer has died after being shot Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said to KCTV, Capt. Robert Dave Melton died while reporting on an armed disturbance call.

Police Chief Terry Zeigler said the shooting happened at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue following an armed disturbance call at 1:33 p.m.

Officers arrived on the scene at 1:37 p.m. Melton was shot at 1:58 p.m., according to police. He attempted to make contact with another suspect in the area.

Police on scene say the officer responded alone to a shots fired call. Officer Tom Tomasic said on the scene multiple suspects are in custody.

FBI is also on the scene investigating.

The ATF has arrived at Juniper Gardens at Second Street and Edgerton Drive, where the original disturbance occurred. A witness told KCTV5 four gun shots were fired, then three more after the car left the scene.

Melton's death comes just after two months following the death of Kansas City police detective Brad Lancaster. Lancaster was shot and killed May 9 near the Kansas Speedway.
