‘Justice wasn’t served’: Charles Roby sentenced to 32 years for killing 15-year-old boy
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A man convicted of killing a 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to 32 years in prison.
Charles Roby is one of four people charged in the death of Makai Neal.
Roby pleaded guilty to first degree reckless homicide and mutilating a corpse.
Neal's family told CBS 58's Pavlina Osta that justice wasn't served on Monday.
According to the criminal complaint, back in February, Makai Neal was shot eight times after Roby accused him of stealing a gun from one of his friends.
Roby, along with four others, set Neal's body and the stolen car he was in at the time, on fire.
Neal's body could only be identified by dental records.
Roby sat quietly while Neal's sister read letters from their parents on how his murder had impacted their lives.
The prosecutor went through Roby's extensive criminal history while Roby's defense attorney said he has taken full responsibility and apologized to the family.
Judge Borowski called this case remarkable for its sheer brutality.
"Pure brutality, flat out evil behavior, with an awful prior record. I interrupted the state because, even for me, this is terrible," said Judge David Borowski.
"No parents should have to imagine, but I don’t get to imagine that. I have to live with me every single day and it haunts me, it breaks me, it destroys me," said Makai Neal's sister, reading a letter from their mother.
As for the three others charged, one is back in court next month, and the other two appear for plea hearings in January.
