WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly has decided to leave the Republican Party after the riots that happened at the U.S. Capitol.
Reilly said he doesn't have any further comment other than a Facebook post where he made the statements.
The post said in part, "This will possibly be the end of my political career but I have to put this out there because I'm so upset."
He goes on to say, "I am ashamed that I was a member of the Republican Party and I don't know how I can ever be a member again."
Alderman Don Browne spoke with him Wednesday, and said he doesn't think the post will have a big impact on Waukesha.
"My first message to the people of Waukesha would be as Aaron Rodgers would say 'relax.' There’s not going to be the big counter-revolution in Waukesha city government. The way the government operates, we’re very non-partisan. There’s no primaries or anything like that. People ask me all the time when I do my campaigns if I’m Republican or Democrat, I’m more interested in your garbage getting picked up on time and job creation and all those things and education -- and all those things that make your community a better place,” Browne said.
The next mayoral race is April. It's unclear how the Facebook post will impact the race.
