Human case of West Nile virus confirmed in Barron County resident

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) confirmed the first sign of West Nile virus activity in the state this year.
They say a human case has been confirmed for a resident of Barron County.
DHS also says mosquitoes from Milwaukee and Lafayette counties have tested positive for the virus.
The virus is spread to humans and other animals through mosquito bites and is not transmittable from person to person.
"The first detections of West Nile virus this year are a reminder to take steps to prevent mosquito bites and possible disease. West Nile virus poses a risk to all Wisconsinites, but people who have weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious illness," said Paula Tran, state health officer and administrator of the Division of Public Health.
Officials say an average of 18 cases of the illness are reported in Wisconsin residents each year.
