Homes evacuated due to gas leak, possibly linked to construction

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A handful of homes were evacuated near 13th and Greenfield Avenue just before noon Thursday.

Fire crews were called for a gas leak. There was construction in the area, and they believe a crew may have hit a gas line.

"We had gas migrating down the block a bit, so we had to evacuate all the homes on 13th Street, and we ended up calling for We Energies," said MFD Battalion Chief Robert Hartung. "They were able to secure the source."

We Energies stopped the leak, and the line is being repaired. The people who were evacuated were able to go back home within about 20 minutes. No gas-related health issues have been reported.
