NOW: ’Heartless and cold-blooded’: 22-year-old man gets life in prison for killing woman on Milwaukee’s south side

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee family got justice Thursday, after their loved one was killed while acting as a good Samaritan.

Fifty-nine-year-old Jeanette Jimenez was shot Jan. 26 while trying to stop a domestic violence incident.

Twenty-two-year-old Darren Williams was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for Jimenez's murder.

He won't be eligible for parole for 60 years, an even longer timeline than initially recommended by state prosecutors.

After learning his fate, Williams was walked out of the courtroom shouting profanities.

This summer, a jury found Williams guilty of first-degree intentional homicide for shooting Jimenez five times.

"The brave act by Jeanette cost her her life, and it was absolutely heartless and cold blooded," said Wisconsin state attorney Ian Vance-Curzan.

More than a dozen of Jimenez's family members watched Thursday's sentencing.

Jimenez's family said she was known for her generosity, and they were not surprised to learn she died trying to help her upstairs neighbor during a domestic violence incident.

"For the sake of a compassionate heart, her heart is no longer beating," said Judge Laura Crivello.

The victim's sister showed compassion in the courtroom for Williams.

"I forgive you, and I ask God to have mercy for your soul," said Luz Quinonez-Hurd.

That sympathy wasn't returned, as Williams showed no remorse, and only maintained innocence.

"It's an out and out denial. There is no taking of responsibility," Judge Crivello said.

Despite losing their loved one, Jimenez's family believes justice was properly served.

"I have the comfort in knowing that he will never forget the name, Jeanette Jimenez," her brother said.

Family members said their goal now is to keep her memory alive.

Judge Crivello shared Jimenez was a medical donor.
