‘He took everything from me’: Family grieves Milwaukee shooting victim in double shooting that killed 3

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The family of Shamarla “Asir” Hare is remembering Shamarla as a loving parent, Navy veteran and a person who would do anything for those around them, as family struggles to cope with Shamarla’s killing.

“She was a fun-loving person, she would give the shirt off her back, the shoes off her back for people,” Shamarla’s sister, Tiara Green, said.

Shamarla was one of three people killed Saturday in a string of shootings, according to Milwaukee police.

Her family says the loss has left a permanent void.

“I will never understand why this person did that. He doesn't know he took everything from me, everything,” Shamarla’s mother, Tarshia Hare, said.

According to court documents, 36-year-old Thomas Zollicofer first shot and killed his former live-in girlfriend, Vanessa DeHerrera, and her friend, Scott Buchholz, at an apartment near 21st and Pierce streets.

About 25 minutes later, prosecutors say Zollicofer went to Shamarla’s home near 39th and Townsend streets.

Witnesses told investigators he walked inside asking for someone else before pulling out a gun and shooting Shamarla.

“I don’t know why he felt to take her life for that it makes no sense I’ll never understand that,” Shamarla’s uncle, Marick Hare, said.

Zollicofer was arrested Tuesday after an hour-long standoff.

Investigators say preliminary ballistics testing links one of the guns to shell casings found at both homicide scenes. According to the criminal complaint, cell phone data also places Zollicofer’s phone near both shootings.

But for Shamarla’s family, an arrest cannot undo the loss.

“There will never be forgiveness for this, never,” Marick Hare said.

Shamarla mother said apologies cannot ease the pain.

“That will not bring my baby back, you understand me. The sorry’s, apologies, aren’t going to stop the pain and it damn sure isn't going to bring my baby back,” Tarshia Hare said.
