Handmade Valentine's Day cards and chocolate bring smiles to Racine seniors
CBS 58 RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) - As Valentine’s Day approaches, many of us are thinking about flowers and time with the people we love. But for some seniors, the holiday can feel lonely.
In Racine, senior helpers hand delivered cards and chocolate to make sure seniors feel remembered and loved.
For Senior Helpers of Racine, Valentine’s Day is about showing up.
Staff walked into St. Monica’s Senior Facility carrying stacks of cards and boxes of chocolate.
Robin Benson from Senior Helpers said, “We just want them to have a nice Valentine's. Who doesn’t want chocolate on Valentine's Day?”
Senior Helpers collected 1,500 handmade cards from local schools, from pre-k through high school, and handed them out one by one.
“We pick a place where we can acknowledge our seniors, where we can show people how much these people mean to the community," said Benson.
She said the visit shows seniors they matter and that people in the community are thinking about them. She added, “They just want to talk to somebody, they just want company, they just want to be acknowledged that they’re still here.”
Some seniors said opening a card brought back memories.
“Well that you’re just remembered because sometimes you don’t have your family right by to do things for you and it bring back memories of when you’re at school and how many valentines did you did," said senior Barbara Loukidis.
For others, the cards reminded them of their own family.
Martha Krimmer said, “I have a great granddaughter that’s in 3-k and they said this was a 3-k person who made this so that makes me really happy.”
Benson said that just a few minutes spent listening, talking, or reading a book with a senior can make a big difference.
“You can tell even the young kids are acknowledging our seniors and that’s what we want, we want to get it out there that these people are so important to us," said Benson.
