Greenfield man sentenced to 25 years for reckless driving crash that killed 4-year-old
GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A tearful court day as the family of 4-year-old Alexis Calles Gonzalez hear the fate of the man who caused their son's death. Thomas McIntyre was sentenced to 25 years in prison and another ten years of extended supervision for first-degree reckless homicide and second-degree reckless injury, charges he pled guilty for.
"All I want to say that it's ruined our lives," said Albino Calles, father of Alexis Calles Gonzalez.
On June 15, surveillance video shows 27-year-old McIntyre run through a light near 108th and National at a high speed. That's when he rammed into the Gonzalez car, fatally injuring the 4-year-old boy and severely injuring his mother and aunt. His legal team said he was trying to take his own life and not intending to hurt anyone else. McIntyre apologetic of his actions.
"I'm sorry for what I did to put us in this situation," said McIntyre.
His two loved ones said this incident was out of character. Judge Jean Kies saying she's never seen a fatality crash quite like this one.
"This traffic fatality is amongst the worst that I have seen serving in this particular rotation as a judge," said Judge Jean Kies.
Although Alexis' mother, Sandra Gonzalez, has healed from most of her wounds, the absence of her little boy still cuts deep. Gonzalez said no amount of prison would be enough for the loss of her child.
"Please before drinking or before harming yourself, be careful with your actions," said Gonzalez.
A restitution hearing is set for Aug. at 1:30 pm.
