Gomez breaks through in series opening win at Detroit

Carlos Gomez returned to the Brewers lineup just one day after being hit in the helmet with a pitch, homering and driving in two runs as the Brewers beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Monday evening at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Gomez, the first batter of the game, ripped a line drive into the left field seats to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. The Brewers center fielder came through again in the seventh inning, driving in Luis Sardinas with a single that proved to be the game winner.

Mike Fiers and several relievers combined to hold a potent Tigers lineup to just two runs, none after the second inning. Francisco Rodriguez shut the door in the ninth to earn the save.

Aramis Ramirez homered to provide the Brewers other run. Ramirez and Gomez each have four home runs this season.

Earlier Monday, the Brewers demoted second baseman Scooter Gennett to AAA Colorado Springs after he hit just .154 to start the season.
