Forget The Gifts...Give The Gift of Giving

(Milwaukee)--We all have gift buying on our minds these days with it being so close to the holidays. However, some want us thinking differently, especially on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. For a second year, this particular Tuesday is deemed \"Giving Tuesday.\" It's a way for those to give back to the community since this is considered the season of giving.

The Salvation Army hopes folks will take part and donate, seeing this year's Red Kettle campaign is running some $65,000 short of where it was just one year ago. The campaign runs from November 1 until the end of January. The hope is to raise more than $3.5 million through all the red kettles and overall online donations.

Meantime, the Hope House of Milwaukee hopes people will consider giving to its organization. About forty percent of its funding comes from community donations. The Hope House is a homeless shelter with a food pantry, but those with the non profit say it's more like a place of transition.

Regardless of where you give, the Better Business Bureau says it's crucial you do your homework when giving online. It's important to always donate to a charity directly. Also make sure to only send money to a company or organization, not a person. Obviously, don't share your information with someone you don't know. And finally, avoid clicking links on unfamiliar websites.

On our homepage, under the newslinks tab, we have a few helpful links to help you navigate if you're making an online donation. And again, remember where your money is going at all times, any time of the year.
