WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Fond du Lac man has died after a car accident late Sunday night in the Town of Polk.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says they got a call around 11:50 p.m. for a car that had hit a bridge embankment on I-41 northbound underneath STH 144.

When deputies arrived, they found the driver was trapped inside the car and was unconscious. They also found that the car had hit a utility pole along the interstate. The driver, a 31-year-old Fond du Lac man, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the car was going northbound, drove onto the median shoulder, overcorrected and lost control before veering off the road. Deputies say the driver was wearing his seatbelt and speed doesn't appear to be a factor. Traffic was shut down in the area for about an hour and a half.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says this is the seventh traffic fatality of 2018 in Washington County. The name of the driver has not yet been released.
