‘Flooded with calls’: SE Wisconsin roofing company working around the clock to clear ice dams

PEWUAKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) - Jason Stendahl and his team are not sleeping much this week and working sunup to sundown to clear ice dams from roofs across the southeast Wisconsin region.

“We’re just flooded with calls, we have four steamers going right now, two-man crews all at once, so we’re pretty much running around the clock,” Stendahl said. “I’m working on about two hours of sleep.”

Stendahl is with LeFever roofing and works in the winter to help people with ice dams that develop on their roofs

Ice dams form when snow melts and freezes again, near the edge of the roof where gutters tend to be.

This can lead to broken gutters, roof collapses, and costly leaks in your home.

“One leak in a house can cost 20 grand and an average home for us to ice dam is anywhere from about 950 right now up to depending on how much they want, a couple thousand dollars,” Stendahl said.

The snow came early this year, catching crews off guard and roofs filled with snow before Christmas.

“This year it was like holy smokes, we had to get seals done and do all the maintenance on them overnight,” Stendahl said. “If we continue to get more snow like this, heavy wet stuff, we’ll start seeing roof collapses.”

Stendahl says the ice dams can be avoided by taking care of your roof before winter and clearing snow once it hits.

“You get anywhere from three to six inches on that roof, shovel it off.” Stendahl said. “If you can't get all the snow, call someone like us and we will come out and shovel the roof for you.”

With low temperatures in the forecast, the snow is not going anywhere, and now is the time to take action to keep your roof clear and your home safe.

‘I don’t see anything changing in the future and if we get more snow, it’s just going to be more of a problem," Stendahl said.
