'Find Your Voice' workshop to explore fiber art at Jewish Museum Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Jewish Museum Milwaukee will host a fiber-based craft workshop, titled "Find Your Voice," on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
Aimed at redefining how fiber arts are perceived, the event will be instructed by art historian, surface designer and educator Leah Parkhurst. The workshop will allow participants to delve into the world of fiber art, traditionally dismissed as mere domestic handicraft, to use it as a medium for meaningful dialogue.
According to JMM, fiber-based crafts have been gaining increased recognition as a form of artistic expression. Parkhurst will guide participants in incorporating text into tapestry weaving, using repurposed and upcycled textiles donated by the community.
The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Tapestry program of the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center. Attendees will create tapestry squares that will initially be displayed at the community center before becoming part of a larger, collaborative installation.
Tickets for JMM members are priced at $100, while non-members can attend for $125. The cost covers workshop instruction, materials, equipment and admission to the ongoing special exhibit, "Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse."
