Everyone gets in for free for the opening of Germanfest

MILWAUKEE -- Germanfest is doing something it's never done before; it's allowing everyone in for free for its Friday opening all day.

President Klaus Fromme says they want the Summerfest grounds packed as a gesture to say thank you to military men and women. Germanfest has traditionally allowed the military in for free.

On the eve of the opening, the lakefront was buzzing.

Dozens of cooks were making their final preparations. Potato pancakes and bratwurst are in high demande of course, rivaled only by the beer.

Vendors have the German flag emblazoned on every gift imaginable, they won the World Cup after all.

Dozens of Volkswagon Beatles are also now parked and on display.

\"One of them that is on display is a 1944 Volkswagon Beatle and that was used by the United States Army,\" Fromme explained.

Germanfest will also feature a mass on Sunday.

It also prides itself on an ecletic list of performers.

While many come for traditional music, other acts play to the mainstream from Brett Michaels, to Plain White T's to the Wisconsin Philharmonic.
