Evers announces $14 million in grants for electric vehicle charging stations
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Monday, Nov. 17 that 26 locations will receive grant awards totaling $14 million in federal funding to build electric vehicle charging stations across Wisconsin.
The funding comes through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The charging stations will be built along Wisconsin's Alternative Fuel Corridor to support the more than 37,000 electric vehicles registered in the state, as well as travelers and visitors, according to the governor's office.
The announcement comes after Evers joined a multi-state lawsuit earlier this year to stop the Trump Administration from blocking over $60 million in NEVI program funding Wisconsin expected to receive. A federal judge blocked the Trump Administration's action in June, allowing several electric vehicle infrastructure projects utilizing NEVI funding to move forward in Wisconsin, according to the governor's office.
This latest round of awards fills coverage gaps after the first round was announced in May 2024.
Through the first two rounds of awards, WisDOT has awarded more than $36.4 million for a total of 78 projects.
Site locations include fuel convenience stores, restaurants, lodging and retail stores.
