MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A growing number of electrolyte powders and drink mixes have appeared on store shelves and social media as June marks National Hydration Month. Health experts and fitness professionals are emphasizing their potential role in replacing minerals lost through sweat, particularly in hot weather or intense physical activity.

Neal Rhutasel, a bartender at Life Time Brookfield, joined us Monday, June 23 to explain how electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium help regulate hydration and muscle function. He said athletes and outdoor workers often benefit from added supplementation.

Rhutasel said quality electrolyte products should avoid added sugars and artificial ingredients. At Life Time, he prepares a nonalcoholic blood-orange drink using a branded blend with lime water and citrus juice.

The recipe for his Blood-Orange Marg-norita, featuring Life Time's LTH Hydrate blend:

  • Have two small glasses standing by with ice in them;
  • In a shaker bottle, combine two packets of blood orange LTH Hydrate with ½ cup of water. LTH Hydrate is made without artificial sweeteners or colors;
  • Pour between the two small glasses. Top each with lime sparkling water and lime juice;
  • Garnish with an orange slice and serve. Cheers!
