Milwaukee smart meter parking rates to increase on June 23

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Department of Public Works announced Friday that metered parking rates will increase beginning Tuesday, June 23.

The department says the city embarked on a strategy two years ago to replace aging coin-fed meters with smart meters allowing customers to pay via coins, credit cards, or the MKE Park app.

As part of the initiative, the Common Council adopted a rate change to take effect following "significant installation of a smart meter network."

DPW will implement the following hourly rates with existing smart meters:

  • Smart meters that are $1.50 will be $2.00
  • Smart meters that are $1.00 will be $1.25
  • Smart meters that are $.50 will be $.75

The department says since resuming metered parking regulations on June 10, notices without fines have been placed on offending vehicles rather than citation.

Beginning Tuesday, parking enforcement officers will be issuing citations for metered parking violations throughout the City of Milwaukee.
