Dozens evacuated from flooded homes in Germantown neighborhood

GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Parts of Germantown are underwater following this weekend’s storms.

Areas of County Line Road are flooded and blocked off, and dozens of homes in the Riversbend neighborhood are surrounded with floodwaters.

Germantown Fire Chief John Delain announced on Tuesday that a voluntary evacuation is in place.

“We will continue working on this until we’re confident that everybody who wants to get out has gotten out,” Delain said.

Fire crews and dive teams spent several hours on Tuesday going door-to-door checking on people, to see if they wanted to stay or leave.

“I would absolutely say this is a life-threatening situation, however this is their private property and we can’t make them leave,” Delain said.

Germantown President Bob Soderberg says as of Tuesday afternoon, 68 people decided to evacuate.

Those who evacuated were re-located to nearby hotels with the help of the Germantown School District and the Germantown Police Department.

Brenton Barker lives near the flooding but can still drive in and out of the neighborhood.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Barker said. “They asked me if I wanted to leave and I said I’m good, my basement is dry, thankfully.”

Chief Delain says the department is being forced to pump water onto County Line Rd. to keep water away from a nearby lift station.

“This is the most serious flood I’ve seen in Germantown and I’m a lifelong resident,” Delain said. “I can’t recall anything close to this. We do have some areas that normally flood, nothing ever like this.”

Chief Delain says the village is unsure how long the flooding will last, and how long they will have to pump water onto County Line Rd.
