Dozens drop off flood-damaged items before last day of free services on Aug. 31

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Milwaukee's Department of Public Works staff says residents have until Sunday, Aug 31 to either drop off their large, flood damaged items for free or call DPW for curbside pickup.

On Saturday, dozens of people made their way through the line on N. Industrial Road to drop off items. Brett Fuller said he has made his way to the drop off center five times to get rid of treasures now considered trash.

“I lost like 40 percent of my collectables. I do games like Dungeons and Dragons, which I gained from 40 years ago that I completely lost,” Fuller said. “There are some things here, like the first game I ever bought when I was little, with my own money, that’s completely gone. There’s memories you can never get back.”

On Friday, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said 15 thousand homes have utilized the free curbside pickup and 23 thousand vehicles have made their way to Milwaukee’s two drop-off sites.

“You got some people that don’t have their stuff out of their basement yet,” said David Johnson, who dropped off items to the center on Industrial Road on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Governor Tony Evers requested a presidential disaster declaration from President Trump. It would provide FEMA dollars to six counties.

Drop off centers will resume their regular hours from Tuesday to Sunday from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. You can read more about their rules for safe disposal once their free services end here.
