MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This week was an exciting one for movie fans in Milwaukee. The Downer Theatre is back in business.

For the first time since it's sudden close last September, the historic east side showplace is opening its doors to movie fans once again.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson helped cut the ribbon for the reopening ceremony on Friday, April 12.

The Downer Theatre dates back to 1915 and it's shut down was sad news for people all over town.

But Milwaukee Film has taken over operations of the theater, and Alderman Jonathan Brostoff, who represents the east side district, couldn't be more excited.

"Milwaukee Film has stepped up and the community has reopened one of the most iconic, amazing theaters in the whole city. And it's more great news for Downer, one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the whole city. And we're just thrilled, this is amazing," said Brostoff.

The Downer's reopening coincides with this week's start of the Milwaukee Film Festival.
