12-year-old drowns after jumping into lake near Racine boat launch
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine County Sheriff's Office says a 12-year-old boy has died after drowning Wednesday, Aug. 13.
First responders were called to the Pershing Park boat launch around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday morning for reports of a person who had gone underwater and did not resurface.
According to the fire department, first responders arrived within three minutes and found a bystander in the water searching for an adolescent who was swimming with a friend.
The sheriff's office says deputies learned three boys were playing and swimming near the boat launch when one boy jumped from an elevated ledge into the water. He reportedly resurfaced but appeared to struggle before going back underwater and not resurfacing.
Deputies say the boy's friend tried to reach him but was not successful.
Divers located the swimmer on the bottom of the lake after about an hour of search efforts involving multiple agencies. The child was taken to Ascension Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
“Our sincerest condolences go out to the young man’s family and loved ones during this tragic time," Sheriff Schmaling stated.
The sheriff's office is urging the public to exercise extreme caution around the water.
