Complaint: Racine mother allegedly left children in vehicle on 80 degree day

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Racine woman is facing child neglect charges after reportedly leaving two children in a running vehicle while shopping at a Dollar Tree Monday.

Officers responded to a welfare check request in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree store on 39th and Erie St. on July 1.

Police spoke with a witness who said that she saw two boys in the backseat of a running vehicle and had concerns about their safety.

The mother, 22-year-old Dejane T. Harrison, had gone inside the store to shop, according to a criminal complaint.

Upon arrival, police found a 4-year-old and an 11-month-old child sleeping in the car. The car was reportedly running with its windows down and very loud music playing. The reporting officer also noted that the temperature was about 80 degrees outside.

Harrison told officers that she was only inside the store for a few minutes, but a witness indicated that the children had been left unsupervised in the open, running car for at least 25 minutes.

She faces two charges of child neglect, according to court documents.
