Community Closet helping Wauwatosa students

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wauwatosa School District is launching a Community Closet to ensure all students have the cold weather gear and personal hygiene products they need.

The district, along with the Parent Teacher Association Council, is asking for donations of new and gently used winter clothing, new laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and other critical items. Donations can be dropped off on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Longfellow Middle School from 9 until 11 a.m. There will also be collection bins located inside each Wauwatosa elementary, middle, and high school after the event.

The district says families or close contacts of students can make anonymous requests for items from the Closet, and then school guidance counselors will help coordinate the requests.

“This is an incredible undertaking - not only in size and scope, but also in terms of the critical need our community has for this type of support,” Dr. Demond Means, Wauwatosa School District Superintendent, said in a press release.

The district says $250 grant, awarded by the Wisconsin PTA this fall, helped create the Community Closet.
