Clean up continues 1 month after EF-2 in Lisbon-Sussex area
CBS 58 SUSSEX, Wis (CBS 58) - It’s been one month since an EF-2 tornado touched down in Waukesha County and ripped through parts of Lisbon and Sussex.
“It was a lot of trees laying around, a lot of damage, part of my neighbor’s house was in the road, part of the roof,” Sussex resident Ryan Olson said.
The tornado hit homes, businesses, a church, and other parts of a neighborhood just north of the intersection of Silver Spring Dr. and Highway 164.
“It was a lot of devastation,” Olson said. “We live by a train here and it sounded like there was a train off in the distance.”
The cleanup started as soon as the storm cleared on April 14.
“We’ve been cleaning up pretty much nonstop since the storm and haven't really had the chance to breathe a whole lot,” E-Z Lawn Care co-owner Ezra Heinritz said.
Heinritz says his typical lawn care company has had to adjust after the tornado left behind so much damage.
“We kind of turned into a tree company overnight just trying to help where we can.” Heinritz said. “Just very thankful for the local community being understanding and that we could take care of what we could and get up and going again.”
There are still traces of the damage from the night of the tornado one month later, but the area has come a long way since that night in April.
“You don’t want to sit around and wait for things to happen even though you’re waiting for insurance a little bit and that sort of thing, that’s a bit of a process but everyone wants to clean up and get their lives back to normal,” Olson said.
