City Worker Dies After Being Hit by Speeding Vehicle in Racine

City worker in Racine has died after sustaining injuries from being struck by a speeding vehicle while collecting recyclables as part of his job on Wednesday.

According to the Mayor of Racine, Mark Gates died this afternoon.

“We received official word that our colleague, Mark Gates, died this afternoon from injuries sustained after having been struck by a speeding vehicle while collecting recyclables as part of his job.  Mark was a highly respected and dedicated employee as well as a deeply faithful and caring pastor, and he will be missed by all who knew him,” said  Racine Mayor John Dickert.

Racine Police Department responded to a traffic accident involving a vehicle and a City of Racine garbage truck on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Washington Ave. and Oregon St.

One party was injured as a result of the accident.

The injured party was taken via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by our Traffic Unit. No other information is being released at this time.

Racine Police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this crime.
