MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The city of Milwaukee has seen a decline in volunteers and available shelters to help people displaced by disasters like the floods and events like fires.

In an effort to help more people in need, the Milwaukee Fire Department, Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, and Red Cross are coming together to give people better ways of finding shelter.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson was at the meeting; he said officials would be working to tackle this issue even if the flooding hadn't happened.

"I want everyone within the sound of my voice to think, to really take an account of how you might be able to assist, how you might be able to help in situations like these as they arise," Mayor Johnson said.

Highlighting the need for shelters, the Red Cross says it has 14 in our area but just two on Milwaukee's north side where several massive fires have left hundreds without homes in recent months and the historic flooding hit hardest.
