Cards batter Brewers bullpen to take 3-2 win, series

ST. LOUIS - Matt Garza threw six stellar innings before leaving with an oblique issue, and the Cardinals rallied against the Brewers bullpen for a 3-2 win Sunday.

With that win, the Cardinals took two out of three in the weekend series and now sit just a game behind the Brewers in the NL Central standings. The Pirates, who lost in extra innings Sunday in Arizona, are 1.5 games back.

Garza was lifted for pinch hitter Lyle Overbay in the seventh, causing many to question Ron Roenicke's decision to lift his pitcher. Roenicke explained after the game that Garza had told him he had tweaked an oblique, ending his day.

Zach Duke gave up a home run to Matt Holliday, and in the same inning, Jeremy Jeffress gave up an RBI hit to Oscar Taveras that gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers are off Monday before returning to action Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants.
