Car crashes into apartment, sparks fire on Milwaukee's northwest side

Milwaukee firefighters were called to an apartment fire early Wednesday morning, only to discover it all started as a car crash.  Two vehicles collided, and one of them went off the road and crashed through a wall of the apartment complex at 60th and Green Tree.  That collision sparked a fire that spread to the building.

Milwaukee fire officials say one person was injured in the crash, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.  The extent of their injuries are unknown right now.

Of the apartment complex's 16 units, only 12 were occupied at the time of the fire.  The Red Cross is assisting 16 residents impacted by providing temporary shelter, emergency financial assistance for food and clothing, as well as personal hygiene supplies.

The car remained among the building rubble for several hours, finally being towed away around 6 a.m.

The cause of the crash that led to the fire is still being investigated.
