Caledonia police seek driver who fled scene of fatal traffic accident

CALEDONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred in the Village of Caledonia Monday afternoon, Aug. 3.

Caledonia police and rescue responded to State Highway 38 and 4 Mile Road for a two vehicle accident around 2:20 p.m., according to a police report.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Honda Sedan was traveling north on State Highway 38, approaching 4 Mile Road, while an unknown vehicle traveled west on 4 Mile Road, approaching State Highway 38.

Police say the vehicle stopped for a stop sign began to proceed into the intersection and failed to yield the right of way to the northbound Honda. The Honda swerved into the southbound lane of STH 38 to avoid striking the vehicle and was struck head-on by a pickup truck that was traveling southbound. 

The unknown vehicle went around the accident and left the scene. 

Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the operator of the Honda died at the scene. 

The operator of the pickup truck suffered injuries and was taken to Ascension All Saints Hospital.

Police say the unknown vehicle is described as a tan, 4-door sedan.
