MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) announced Thursday, July 24, that the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has cleared Brown Street Academy of lead. Making all nine schools previously relocated during the 2024-25 school year clear of lead risks.
After temporarily being relocated to Andrew S. Douglas Middle School, MPS stated that Brown Street Academy is ready to welcome students and staff back on the first day of the new school year on Sept. 2.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius stated this in a press release:
"This is an important milestone in our work to clear school of lead dangers. Our students, families and staff navigated the disruptions caused by building relocations last year with great patience and resilience. I'm grateful to them for their partnership through this challenge. I'm also pleased that the students and staff of Brown Street Academy and all of these impacted schools, will be able to start the school year back in their own buildings."
No Brown Academy students were identified with any blood lead levels from the school, and MPS is continuing to work in cleaning up lead at district buildings this summer.
School officials state they are looking forward to eliminating all lead dangers from school built in 1978 by the end of the year.
