Brewers getting ready for player draft

(AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers are getting ready for the first-year player draft, which begins on Monday.

The Brewers own the ninth overall selection in the first round of the 40-round, three-day draft ending Wednesday. They also have two other picks on Day 1.

Milwaukee is in the middle of a rebuilding project, but has found surprising success so far in the National League Central. The Brewers were three games over .500 going into a weekend series at Arizona, in first place by a game over the Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers' minor league system is already considered to be on the best in the majors, thanks in part to promising prospects acquired after the team dealt away veterans over the past couple seasons.
