Brewers acquire Lance McCullers Jr., Colton Gordon from Astros
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon and cash considerations from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Jadyn Fielder.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers transferred left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day injured list.
McCullers, 32, has spent his entire Major League career with Houston, compiling a 53-40 record with a 3.85 ERA in 154 appearances. The 2017 All-Star and two-time World Series champion has recorded 904 strikeouts in 813 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a .231 batting average.
McCullers underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, causing him to miss the entire 2019 season. He later underwent right flexor tendon surgery in 2023 and missed all of the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
This season, McCullers went 2-3 with a 6.86 ERA in eight starts before landing on the 15-day injured list May 19 with right shoulder inflammation. He was on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land before being traded.
Gordon, 27, was selected by Houston in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He made his Major League debut last season, going 6-4 with a 5.34 ERA and one save in 20 games. He also appeared in four games during two stints with the Astros this season.
Milwaukee sent 21-year-old Jadyn Fielder to Houston as part of the deal. Fielder, the son of former Brewers slugger Prince Fielder, signed with Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent in July 2024. He played his first professional season with the Rookie-level ACL Brewers before beginning this season with Class-A Carolina.
