Blast at the ballpark: CBS 58 meteorologists perform explosive experiments for Brewers Weather Day
MILWUAKEE (CBS 58) -- It was truly a blast at the ballpark Wednesday, May 7, for 7,600 students on Brewers Weather Day.
Students from 90 Wisconsin schools visited American Family Field to watch CBS 58's meteorologists show off science experiments based on weather.
"Really fun, lots of explosions," said Helders Rivera, a student at St. Matthias Parish School.
"I learned that lightning is faster than the fastest baseball player," said Rivera's classmate, Nate Carlos.
One experiment was mixing pure potassium and water to create hydrogen, with an effect similar to lightning.
They also poured potassium permanganate into hydrogen peroxide to create water vapor.
"We learned about weather vapor and how clouds are made," said Emerson Howard, a student at Silver Spring Intermediate School.
The students even made their own thunder through a cheering contest, measured by a decibel reader.
Of course, there was also a sausage race.
"It's just a way to get out, get out away from the desk for a little bit, get to see the ballpark," said Matthew Cottrell, a chaperone from Wilson Elementary School.
After the show, the kids got to try their own hand at forecasting Milwaukee's weather on a green screen.
"It's my favorite thing of the year. I love to teach," said CBS 58 Chief Meteorologist Drew Burgoyne. "I got interested in weather in the fourth grade, so I can relate, and I hope maybe this sparks something for these kids."
