“Every time we hear someone else has been lost, another family is destroyed, it’s heart-wrenching and it reminds us we need to keep doing this work,” Vision Zero Policy Director Jessica Wineberg said.
On Sunday night, 49-year-old Amy Austin and 48-year-old May Daiber were hit and killed on Milwaukee’s north side.
“Please slow down, you guys are killing these beautiful, innocent people. Our friends, our family, your family, your friends are out there -- so please slow down, stop doing this stupid nonsense driving,” May’s friend, Fua Okrzesik, said.
Okrzesik knew both of the victims but has known Daiber since they were in their teens.
“I loved them so much, we miss you guys. Just please, if you have any information, come forward,” Okrzesik said.
In 2025, 13 pedestrians were killed.
“No one really knows why people are willing to drive suicidally or homicidally on our streets,” Wineberg said.
Vision Zero works to make streets safer by redesigning roads and creating barriers for people trying to speed.
“We can change the designs of streets where it’s much more difficult, if not impossible to speed,” Wineberg said. “If we have to, we're gonna build streets where you can’t race on them.”
