MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People in Bay View are reporting a rise in car break-ins. This time, residents say vandals are breaking sunroofs to get access to cars.
Aaron Bollinger shared his home security video with CBS 58. In it, a person climbs to the top of Bollinger's car to break the sunroof. Shortly after, the car alarm goes off.
Bollinger says it’s a frustrating situation.
“It kinda, in a way, strips away that sense of safety and security and I never felt that before,” said Bollinger.
He’s not the only one this has happened to. Bay View resident Alex Szafran had his sunroof broken twice.
Both times, Szafran says vandals were attempting to steal his car.
“It’s frustrating, especially for people who live here, and it’s something we’ve been dealing with for months and months and months now, with no sort of recourse,” said Szafran.
The Milwaukee Police Department has reported 2,875 car break-ins this year alone. In 2023, there were 2,988 car break ins reported. That's more than a 3% decrease, but police say they want to see a bigger drop in 2025.
Bay View residents say they want to see more police patrols in the area in the evening.
