MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee mother is making sure children can access meals this summer.

The mother of two goes by "Sonny" and lives in Bay View. She posted to Facebook saying she aims to make and distribute free lunches for children at Humboldt Park.

“We all deserve a meal. Whether it’s a snack or a steak, we all deserve to at least have a full stomach at the end of the day," Sonny said.

In the summer months, it can be more difficult for children to be able to access the consistent meals they get in their school. Sonny said the idea that a child might go hungry is tough for her to swallow.

“It shouldn’t happen," Sonny said.

According to a spokesperson with Milwaukee Public Schools, 76.8% of MPS students are actively enrolled in their free lunch program. An online list shows locations that participate in the program where children ages 18 and under can get a meal, regardless of where they are enrolled.

However, Sonny says there can still be more ways to guarantee students have access to food in the summer months.

“Parents can’t always drop their kid off and come back an hour later, they usually drop their kid off and come back eight hours later," Sonny said.

Sonny plans to continue distributing meals on Wednesdays at Humboldt Park, weather permitting. If you are interested in supporting Sonny, her Venmo is @sonnyvalley_ and her profile picture includes a picture of her wiping a mirror. When she's not providing meals, Sonny also runs a cleaning business for private residentials and short-term rentals.
