Baraboo zoo taking Christmas trees for animal enrichment

SAUK COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- If you're looking to get rid of that Christmas tree, the Ochsner Park Zoo in Baraboo, Sauk County, is taking them.

Zoo staff say they put the trees in the enclosures of different animals who use them for different types of enrichment.

The goats and pigs typically just snack on the trees, while beavers and bears rip them apart to use as bedding in the winter months.

"It's great enrichment because it's always good for the animals to express natural behaviors and giving them natural items like trees and plants like that allow them to exhibit those natural behaviors," said Katie Gries, zoo manager.

If you would like to donate your tree, you can leave it in the parking lot by the brown maintenance shed. However, there are some guidelines to follow before making a donation.

1. No tinsel, fake snow, spray paint or flame-retardant sprays on trees
2. No ornaments, hooks or other decorations should be on the trees

Zoo staff says they plan to post pictures and videos on Facebook of the animals enjoying the trees in the coming months.
