Artists wanted for 2 separate mural projects in Milwaukee's Near West Side neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Near West Side Partners, Inc. (NWSP) is looking for Milwaukee artists to create two murals that display the neighborhood's unique qualities.

One mural will be on the northeast corner of the heavily trafficked intersection of North 27th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue. The other will be on the west side of Pete's Pops -- a popular hangout on Vliet Street.

The projects are in partnership with from representatives from Marquette University, the Milwaukee Police Department, and Pete's Pops.

The inspiration for the canvas at 27th and Wisconsin draws on the on the rich history of the people, events, and landmarks of the neighborhood. Instead of a traditionally painted mural, this piece of art will be a vinyl building wrap so artists of all mediums are encouraged to apply.

The mural on Vliet Street, in coordination with the building and business owners, will be painted on panels for greater longevity, or if necessary, be added directly onto the brick facade of the building.

Special attention will be paid to artists from the Near West Side, however all applicants are being considered.

Interested artists should submit their concept sketch, a description of the concept (150 words or less), a biography (250 words or less), and plan for community engagement in the development of the mural to Anna Weirick at ccc@nearwestsidepartners.org. Proposals must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Sunday, April 25.

Finalists will be selected by a panel with notification announcements scheduled for the end of April. Each finalist will receive an honorarium of $150 and be given two weeks to update their submission based on feedback from the panel.

Final submissions will be due by 11:59 pm on Sunday, May 16 with a final announcement scheduled for the end of May.
