Artists sought for Black Cat Alley mural in Milwaukee, $1.6K commission offered 🎨

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Artists are being invited to showcase their talents with a new mural at Black Cat Alley.

The East Side Business Improvement District made the call for artists on Friday, Aug. 4, to create an original 10-foot by 8-foot mural that is scheduled to be completed on-site in September, with an estimated end date of Sept. 19.

“Black Cat Alley is a one-of-a-kind outdoor art gallery and serves as a favorite attraction on the East Side,” said David Smulyan, Executive Director of the East Side BID, in the Aug. 4 release. “We’re always looking for ways to keep the space fresh and engaging to attract visitors and to support and highlight our local artists."

Jurying is open to artists over the age of 18, who may submit up to two proposals with a color sketch of their proposed designs. The full project requirements are available online, and artists must submit their proposals by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18

The selected artist will be announced during the week of Aug. 28.

The Sept. 2023 mural installation will be painted on a brick surface, with wall dimensions of approximately 10 feet wide by 8 feet tall. The wall will be prepped prior to the mural installation, including power washing and priming, and the selected artist will receive a $1,600 commission
