MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 62-year-old man is dead after an apartment fire near 44th and Arthur Court Saturday night.
Battalion Chief Milwaukee Fire Department, Chris Schutte, says the fire started at 6:25 p.m. when 911 dispatch received a call of a reported apartment fire.
Crews arrived within minutes of the call and saw smoke coming out of the side entrance to the building. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire. It was contained to one unit on the bottom floor. Crews located one adult man who was unconscious at the time. He was pulled out and taken to a hospital by ambulance. The medical examiner says the victim died and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
The unit itself is gutted and neighbors CBS 58 spoke with say it was a terrifying night.
"We knew we had to evacuate, we grabbed what we could. Walking down the hallway just to get out the door was hard. We couldn't see. We couldn't breathe, we're just grateful we got out alive. 02:08:12-23 "I've never experienced anything like this before and you always think its never going to happen to you and then It does," said Heather Tibbetts.
The Chief says the fire is under investigation by an arson investigator and the Milwaukee police department. No other information was immediately released.
